HUNDREDS OF LIVES LOST,
ISCHIA BURIED DEEP IN MUD

Further particulars are to hand regarding the destruction following tho cloudburst on Mount Vesuvius,
Torrents of volcanic mud and lava blocks swept over the funicular railway up the mountain, overwhelmed the crops over miles of country, and crushed many houses, A number of bathers perished at Casamicciola, on the Island of Ischia.
Many houses were flooded and collapsed at Amain, and there was loss of life there also.
• Tremendous sea.? are running in the Bay, of Naples. In the vicinity of tins port an inundation undermined a number of houses. ' ' \. •
Twenty-six bodies have been recovered. Pour battleships have been sent to assist in rescue work.
The Island of Ischia is reported to be partially submerged with mud twentyfour feet deep. The dead number. 200.
The damage at Casamicciola and Ischia has been minimised.
Cotara suffered severely. There ( there were 200-victims. AH the houses in the street collapsed.
At Majori, Salerno, twenty lives were lost.
