MELBOURNE'S LORD MAYOR

WELCOMES IT.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.

(Rec. October, 26, 9.15 p.m.)

Melbourne, October 26.

The Lord Mayor officially received the Wangau'ui Band at the • Town , Hall at' noon, and on behalf of the citizens of Melbourne extended a cordial welcome to its members, and congratulated them on the great honour they-had achieved in winning the Australasian championship. Ho was delighted to think that a small town in the sister Dominion had displayed such pluck and enterprise as to sond its band a long distance at such expense. They might feel proud, for they had won no mean honour. In New Zealand the. band had held an unbeaten record for eight years, and it had now gained fresh and greater laurels, not only in music, but also in marching. This was/most, creditable to, New Zealand, and Wangamii in particular. The visit of the; New Zealanders was another evidence of! the fine 'spirit which, had prompted • the. Dominion; to, take . a prominent part in the past in important Imperial questions.

Mr. Muir, manager of the band, replied on, its behalf.

An organ recital was specially arranged for the band at the Town Hall in the afternoon. '~,.-.

, HIGH PRAISE PROM THE JUDGE.- •':,.. .'. (Rec. October 26, 10.35 p.m.) ', :. Melbourne, October 26.:, Mr; Short, the King's Trumpeter, who adjudicated at tho Ballarat band contest, states, that the leading bands in the competition would hold their own with any band in Great Britain. He had never heard Mr.\ Code, the champion cornetist, equalled anywhere. '
