The bank returns for; the September quarter reviewed in this issue (says' the. .current number of - the "Trade Review") reveal movements similar to those usually seen in that period of the year, that is to say, that in tho three months since June 30, deposits have been reduced and advances enlarged. The changes, however, arc light, the combined total of the two movements being only £558,876. Advances to farmers would not have, their full effect in this return, as tho figures give tho averages for the three months. *A stronger factor, however, is found in a. comparison of tho imports and exports; of the auarter. By these figures we see that tho .imports of the quarter" exceeded the exports by £1,620,881; September is a weak quarter for exports, which- are' usually . exceeded in value by tho imports. The excess on the present occasion is, however, heavy and might well have resulted in greater demands upon the banks than the returns indicate. Possibly such demands have been made, but have been counterbalanced by accumulation of funds from tho rich volume of our exports.
