There was a large attendance, but prices bid at auction did not Quite reach tho vendors' ideas of value. There was also submitted a 285-acre dairy farm, situated close to Otaki, belonging: to Mrs. E. G. Rand. Tho bidding for this property also failed to reach tho owner's reserve. ; MINING NEWS. WELLINGTON SHARE MARKET. - Excellent business was done yesterday in New Sylvia shares, several thousand changing hands at 3s. 6d. and 3s. sd. -Talismans sold at '565. Bd., but weakened slightly at the closo of the day. Waihis were quiet, and Junctions ! were steady. May Queens were slightly firmer.- The prepara-, i tory work in . connection with the deep level crosscut from the Queen of Beauty shaft is now. we!! forward, and it is expected that everything, will be in readiness in the course of ano'ther two or three weeks for resuming work permanently in the face of the crosscut:. Crushing operations at the Waiteltauri battery have been resumed, the ore going through the mill being from the Scotia mine. . NOKTHEEN COAL COMPANV. According to the seventh annua! report of the above company the profit and loss account of the Northern Coal Co. shows the profit for tho year to be £7616 6s. lid., which, together with £1972 18s. Bd., brought forward from last year, makes a total of £9589 'ss. 7d.; an interim dividend for the half-year ended March 31, 1910, has been paid, absorbins £1735 25., leayinir. a balance 'of £7854 3s. 7d. Out of this sum, the following depreciations have, been allowed, namely, of machinery, plant,, buildings, etc., £1012 3s. Bd.; off company's vessels, £478; and off the Kiripaka mine pror porty £1000, making a total of, £2490 3s. Bd., which leaves an available balance of £5363 19s. lid. for appropriation. This balance the directors' recommend be disposed of as follows:—To payment of a dividend of 6d. per share (making a total of 10 per cent, for the year), : £1735 25.; to be added to the reserve: fund (making a total of \ £6000 to that account), £10CO; to carry forward to next year's account (an increase of £655 19s. 3d.), £2628 17s. lid. For tho year tho output from both mines totalled 92,651 tons of coal. Tho £1000 written off tho Kiripaka mino is a provision against loss, sustained through tho flooding of that last August by an unexpected inflow -of water from the Ngunguru River, which will restrict operations in this mine to the extraction of. pillars. Prospecting with the ~ diamond drill is being energetically carried on in contiguous areas, but some distance away from tho river; In conclusion;' the report states that the company's Hikurangi mine continues to look satisfactory, and its output has been well maintained. On an adjacent property under option to the company, boring operations have been carried out with encouraging results. - The company's vessels, which are all in good order and well-found, have-largely contributed to the profits for tho year. Finding it necessary to have,a depot at Auckland, the directors- acquired a Harbour Board leasehold, on the at Custom Street West, by which facilities for the landing and storage of-coal are provided.' . . MUTUAL BUILDING ' SOCIETY.' The'balance-sheet of the Mutual BeneiK Building and Investment Society of. Canterbury for the year ended' September 30, shows that there has been a substantial increase in the society's business over that of the previous- year. After providing for the payment of,», dividend at the'rate of 7 : per cenf7, the profit and loss account shows a credit balance of .£822 16s. 4d., out of which £SCO has been, placed to tho reserve fund, which will now stand at £5500, and- there remains £322- 16s. - 4d. to carry forward. The amount of loans on mortgage and.investment in shares is now £111,227 14s. 6d. 'Customs' revenue collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to- £1341 7s. 3d. ■ '■ THE METAL MARKETS.
