Mr. Maurice Cohen, having consented to act as conductor, tho oratorio "Messiah" will be put in hand immediately with a view to its production about Christmas time. The number of names already given in should ensure the oratorio being rendered in first-class styW. . At the Police Court to-day ' a man named Jens Sorsen, chared with foiling to comply with an order of the Court to contribute to his wife's support, showed that he was not earning sufficient to cu-able-him to obey the order, ami the case was dismissed. A young man named William Kelly, who appeared in Court looking much tho worse lor wear, was charged with stealing a pair of blankets, the property of Mrs. O'Connor, of Stoney Creek, and pleaded guilty. Sergeant Willis stilted that, in April last, accused went to the house of Mrs. O'Connor, and asked to be allowed to use her shed to sleep in. This was granted, and Mrs. O'Connor lent Kelly a couple of blankets. He stayed in.the shed a couple of nights, and, when he left, he repaid the kindness by carrying off the blankets and selling them to a second-hand dealer. Accused said that he sold lh« blankets to pay his passage to Masterton,. where he had a 'job to go to. The magistrate sentenced accused to two months' hard labour, and characterised the theft as.a particularly mean one., Prisoner was also charged with beini? a rogue and vagabond, but, in view of tho fact that he had been sentenced to two months' imprisonment, this was withdrawn. .
