MIRAMAR WORKS.

WATER AND DRAINAGE. TENDERS TO BE CALLED AT ONCE. Tenders are to bo. called at once for the institution of water and drainage services within the Borough of Mjiamai. For these worlce n suui of .KiO.OOO has already been raised—to bo expended in equal parts on the two essential services —^25.000"each*. The water is to l>o conducted from a point near the Kilbiruio Hotel into the borough by means of a 12-inch pip-;, wliteh \rill branch oil. into two β-inch mains at Miramar, one proceeding tb lliraraav North nud the- other to Seatoun. The .borough will, however, not lie fed direct from the city mains, level one (to hold thro; days' supply), to\' be erected half-way up the hill labove ■Townsend Road),-on the eastern side of lliramar, for tlio'supply of the flat, and an elevated surface reservoir to be erected on Signal Station Hill, tor the-supply of the higher levels. The water will be able to reach the low-level reservoir without pumping, but it will be uecessary to pump the water; from tlie- main to the high-level basin, during the night. The council proposes that all. water used in the borough shall pass through inc-ters— each house will liavo to bo supplied with a meter—in- order to' ensure that there shall he no waste. . .■'•''. It is satisfactory to- know that the drainage,of the borough is to be put in hand, at the same time as the water service. The establishment ofi such essentials to comfort and hygiene opens wide the door for the rapid expansion of the borough, which lies between tVellingW and th<» wnt. It shinlld bn mentioned, incidentally, that the Wellington Gas Company is now engaged on the reticulation: of lliramar North.' The company, in the terms of. its agreement with the borough, has agreed to reticulate'one-third oi the district each year,; aiid has started with the- most populous end of Miramar.
