FORt'gEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, ■ "R.W.H.," an old boy of. the Napier ... High .School, contributes, to the columns . of tho school magazine ("Tho Scindian") an interesting account , of a winter trip to Northern British Columbia, which is evidently 'being' boomed at. the present time'. ••X'ort George," he writes,' "is now the distant field which looks green • to dwellers in civilisation. Many of the Canadian papers are filled with real estate advertisements, -in'■which Fort George is portrayed as ' the Detroit ol tho Last Great West,' accessible from Aslicroit in four days, and us ten.. The general outside impression is that about 500 people now reside here in a terrestrial heaven, with .a climate second to none. In reality the town 1 consists of.the Hudson Bay Fort, ten shacks, or 'whares/ a very small sawmill, : a printing office', two outpost. stores, and • iin Indian village. The population consists of 30, white men,, no women, two '. Chinamen, and about 150 Indians'. Port George prices .are, comparatively speak-,, ing, rather high. Flour costs, ten dollars for, SOlbs., mouldy bacon 40 cents a ■ pound, boots eight to twelve dollars, meala of poor quality 50 cents, while a charge of 50 cents is made for. sleeping on the floor in one's own blankets.
