.—$ . KEEN DEMAND FOR BEEF 'CATTLE.' . (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, August 28.' A man named George Allen has been arrested ou a charge- of stealing a sack of oats from Sir. Itobert Johnston, of Makorn. Accused was brought before justices on Saturday morning -and remanded until Monday. ' ' It is stated that Air. W. F. Massey. Leader of tho Opposition, has promised to deliver an aaaress in Alasterton at an early date. . : In Knox Hall on Friday Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, of Carterton, delivered a lecture before a large audienco on the subject of "Poetry." .Tho lecture was illustrated by recitations from various authors. . The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club, at a meeting on Friday night, arranged for the opening "fly" 'of the season to b8 held early in October. It also fixed points lor the hamper delivery.uorth and south of tho town. Sir William Steward, M.P:,' will deliver a lecture before the members of tho Masterton Parliamentary Union on Monday evening. oh the. question of an elective executive. Tho union will, also try the experiment of electing its , own executive. The demand for beef cattio -ia very keen in tho Wairarnpa, and the prices offered are lugher than they have been for many years. Tho cause of the scarcity of lat cuttle is attributed to the high price of wool and the killing nil' of bull calves by those, engaged in tho dairy industry. At a meeting on Friday evening of the managers of tho Masterton. Technical School Mr. Cluttou's resignation as an instructor was accepted. The. managers decided to cordially tlinnk those who bad assisted in making the recent art exhibition so successful. It was stated that the interest, in tho various classes at tho school had been substantially increased as a result of the exhibition. A consignment of- young trout has been sent from tho Mastertou fish butcheries', to Ohakune. ' - ' Mr. Laracy, , general secretary of tbi, Federated Shearers' Union, was in Masterton to-day,- aud addressed a raeetiiii; of the. local branch of tho Shearers' "Union. • ' ;•■ >■ There is somo talk'of the local-co-op-erative dairy company co-operating also for tho purchase of stores, etc., for its/individual members. • There are; over tjventy ' schools in 'this district at which agricultural plots an. to be found. Mr. W. C. Davies, the Education .Board's instructoi, is-'at present engaged in making preparations for' the coming season's work. Mr. Taylor,- M.K.C.V.S., of the Agricultural Department, who was formerly •in private, practico in this district, was last night presented by settlers' of ..thi, district .with a ; handsome illuminated address. - ':■ '■' Several horses have been poisoned oh a farm near Masterton through eating a certain weed. One of the animals died yesterday. ■.— ./.■ Mr. Taylor, veterinary surgeon of the Agricultural Department, gave an interesting address to' a number of farmers last night. He dealt- with ailments in horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs, aud drew special, attention to the fact that mammitis was , decimating tho dairy herds of tho Dominion. He urged tho isolation of cows found to be suffering from the trouble. A cold southerly set in last night and has every appearance of continuing.
