HOCKEY.
[ IMPORTANT SHIELD EVENT. AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON. Tho big match between Auckland (challengers) and Wellington (defenders of the shield), which takes place in Wellington on September 10, is being looked forward to with interest. Two teams played a trial match at Day's Bay on Saturday, and the iinal selection mado appears to bo satisfactory so far. Tho A and B match proved of service to tho local eleven chosen to represent Wellington, and tho A's had an easy win of G goals to 3. D. Smith, G. Strack, and C. Struck scored two goals each for tho A team, whilst Disher was credited with two goals and Dixon one goal on the 'B team's side. The referee was Mr. Turner.' THE WELLINGTON tfEAM. . Mr. Walton, selector, has chosen the following to represent Wellington against Auckland:—Goal-keeper, W. G. Morpeth; full-backs, C. Hicksou, H. Harty; halves, X. Christie, C. Campbell, E. Thompson; forwards, .G. Davies, D. Smith, G.' Strack, C. Strack, E. Loader. C. Hickson will bo captain of tho team. No trial match will bo played next Saturday as was originally intended. B. Kibblewhito (back) and, K. Thompson (forward) are tho reserves. It will be seen that somo alterations have taken place. Morpeth is substituted for L. Davies in-goal, and G. Davies, the well-known forward, is given the position of right-wing in placo of K. Parton. .The team as a whole- is a strong one, and should give a good account of itself. JUNIOR COMPETITION. Ka'rori and Government Insurance met at Day's Bay on •■ Saturday, and played off for final honours. The game was well contested, Karori being returned winners by 3 goals to nil. Lower (2), and Cathie were the scorers. Tho two teams wero well matched. United won from, Y.M.C.A. by default. THIRD ( CLASS.. The final of the third grade fixtures was played at Day's Bay also on Saturday, when Victoria College B were pitted against Government Life, tho latter winning after a good game by 3 goals to 2. . LADIES' MATCHES. /' SENIOR. Hinemoa and Victoria Collego B, met at Day's Bay,, and a drawn .game resulted, each side registering one goal. Miss H. Stairmand was successful for Hinemoa, and. Miss M'Kenzio for College. St. John's defaulted to Victoria College A. Wellington won from Gregg's by default. JUNIOR. The Collego Old Girls-Haeremai gamo resulted iu a draw, neither side scoring a goal. , Celtic won by default.from Hereawa. FOR THE TOURNAMENT. ' . The following players are going to the Nelson Championship Hockey Tournament as the Wollington "A's":—Misses flaws, Moore, B. Fleet, D. Tinney, L. M'lntosh, H. Smith, L. M'Kellar, R. Swiudale, H. Stairmand, Kelling, K. M'lntosh, Lepper, Hale, and Scrimshaw. Wellington will also be represented- at tho tourney by a "B" team, the personnel of which has been published already. Tho Auckland ladies' team and other representative teams reached. Wellington on Saturday on their way to tho tournament.
