She is expected to leave for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and New Plymouth this afternoon. GREY BAR STILL'BAD. Late advices received on Saturday state that tho Greymouth bar was still unworkable, there being a heavy northerly gale raging on the coast. The' Taviuni reports mooting with very dirty weather on Friday-' nignt, the wind coming away from the north-wost.. ~ THE SYDNEY BOAT. Advice has been received that the Hud-dart-Parker Company's Ulimaroa left Sydney for Wellington direct at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tho steamer has 185 paßsengerß and 800 tons of cargo to land at Wellington: She is due in - port early on Wednesday morning. • INDRAGHIRI ARRIVES. The ' Tyser Company's Indraghiri, from Hew York, via Auckland, arrived yesterday afternoon at 3.45, berthing at the King's Wharf. She lands 804 tons of cargo here, and it is expected to despatch her for. Lyttclton to-morrow. A report of tho vessel's voyage appeared in Saturday's issue, i .- HEAVY SEA IN THE STRAITS. Vessel' arriving in port on Saturday night and yesterday report a howling southerly and a big sea at tho entrance ■to tho Heads. The Union Company's chartered steamer Wakefield left the wharf at 11.40 on Saturday night, but could not battle against it. She anchored in Worser Bay, and was thore all day yesterday awaiting a favourable opportunity to proceed to Newcastle. ' THE TAVTUNI'S PROPELLER. On Friday afternoon the U.S.S. Company's steamer Taviuni left Westport for Wellington with a wire-rope entangled round her propeller. A diver went aowu at the Coast port, but his ettortß to remove the obstruction were unavailing. It was. therefore, decided that the steamer should come on to Wellington before proceeding to Dunedin. Shortly, after her arrival on Saturday Mr. Daniels and tho shore repairing stall of tho . Union Company made a start to get things in thorough working order again, and after somo hours of continuous eifort to stop was made yesterday afternoou until this morning, it is understood that there aro still a few coils- to be removed, but the diver should complete his arduous task some time to-day. The vessel .will then leave for Duncdin. ■ ' BARNACLES. The average person can scarcely realise with what rapidity and luxuriance barnacles and other marine growths attach themselves to the bottom of ships. A picture was recently taken at the Eaglo Harbour (Pugot Sound) dry dock of Hall Bros.' Marino Railway and Shipbuilding Company, when tho British ship Halewood was hauled out for scraping and painting. The' vessel had been three years in-tho water without being cleaned, and other thirty tons of barnacles, mussels, and other marine growths had to bo removed before painting could bo done. It can* easily be imagined how a vessel's progress is hampered by a handicap of this kind, and why somo ships are so long at sea. The Halewood was laid up- at Esnuinialt from November 10, 1908, until a short time ago, when she was chartered to load wheat for the United Kingdom After cleaning at Eagle narbour she was towed to Tacoma for cargo. THE PAPAROA'S VOYAGE. The report of the voyage of the Paparoa, which arrived at Auckland on Thursday last,, states that the vessel left London on July 6, and after taking explosives on board proceeded on her journey' to New Zealand, via Tcneriffe, leaving the latter port, after having filled up her bunkers on July' 12. Light north-east and moderate to fresh south-east trades, wore experienced rounding the Cape'on July 29, where she signalled. Moderate to fresh contrarv winds were met with and heavy hiad swells in the Southern Ocean, but no ice was seen. A strong northerly gals na s encountered in the Tasman Sea, with a high dangerous sea, causing tho vessel to be hove-to for 12 hours. Very One weather was met with after till her arrival in Auckland. Captain M. I. Boner is in command of the r»paron, and has with hira Mr. H. Wynya-d as chief officer, Ur W. L. Goddard second, Mr. R. J. Gihh third, and Mr. H. T. Fell, fourth, also Dr Rositer and Mrs. Itositer and daughter' Mr. H. E. Eidler is chief engineer, with Mr. G( Cleaver second, and Messrs. J Morgan, W. Morris, and W. Ross third' fourth, and fifth respectively. Mr. Cameron is chief refrigerating engineer, and Mr. Good second. Mr. R. H. Jair.cr, i-, t'-e electrician and Mr, Ecauca steward in'
charge. As the .vessel his an exceptionally large cargo'to , discharge 'at the northern port .her" arrival hero may be looked for about Friday or Saturday next. ' WIRELESS ON THE ULIJIAKOA. While in Sydney this trip the b,s. TJli'. raaraa, as stated in the cable messages, was 'fitted with' "wireless." Tha system fitted is on the "singins. spark" prinoiole, and has o( late been widely adopted "on numbers of foreign-coins; vessels, and some exceptional. records hare been achieved. Once an operator has been in communication with, a steamer, he will again immediately recognise, through the particular musical tone, which steamer is Bonding- the message. Another advantage of the system is that'it is not. interfered with by atmospheric disturbances, and this is a very import-ant question for vessels trading in Australasian waters, where atmospherio disturbances arc very considorahle. A foature, also an advantage, is that of tho multiple spark gap, whiii increases the efficiency from 20 to Yi) per cent.: that is to say, it is possible to radiate 70 per cent, of the primary energy in the aerial. Conscouently, due to these improvements, it is p'ossiblo to work with' a considerably smaller plant. It will be possible, when the shore stations are fitted .round the coast, to - communicate with vessels. at' any time. TJp to a late hour last night tab Union Company's Eosamond, from New Plymouth, had not put in an appearance. -.. . Owing to stress of weather. the s.s. Aorere did not got away for Patea yesterday. -.-•:,...■■' . ■ I : The Waimea, from Napier, is not expected to show .up at Wellington until daylight this . morning. . "~ . " . /' On Saturday Mr. A.' E. Hayden'took tho place of Mr. J. w. Parions as second mate of the Wangaroa.. Two arrivals in/port yesterday wore, the small sailing vessols Amelia Simins and .Lizzie Taylor, ■• from Ly'ttelton and Timara respectively,.' Captain Littlehales, who is . master. of tho new liner Empire Transport, now en route to Now Zealand from Liverpool, has been for the past twelve years in tho employ of the Hindustan 5.8.. Co.. and has beon in command of nearly all of that company s boats.: An,_arrival at : Auckland on: Saturday, morning was the.Taluud, from Raiotonga. The vessel is .expected here on Friday, September 2.. t-■■-■.■■. -■ On Saturday ,■ morning the s.s. Eipplo arrived at Lyttelton from the Chatham Islands. The Monro- will leave Auckland on Wednesday for Suva, and mil connect with tho Marama for Vancouver. '
