ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

' SCALDED. BY §TEAM. SAFETY VALVE BLOWS QOT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, August 24. An inquest bit. the body of WiFfiain Clements, hulk-keeper, on the Ganymede, wJio died yesterday as the result of injuries sustained on the, previous day through being scalded when • the , safety valve of a boiler blew out, i was held-to-day before Mr. Graham. Tho evidence showed that at tho time of tho accident the Inspector of Machinery (Mr. Bethuue) was testing the safety yalvo of the boiler. When, tho required pressure was obtained, the valvo did not blow off "as it should have done, and Mr. Bethune told deceased to tap tho valve,. and, if that did not. have tho. desired effect, to take half a turn out of /each nut and tap the valve again. ' Deceased said he was doing that. Suddenly the safety valve, blew out, and deceased was badly scalded. The boiler was so housed in that there was very little space available,' and it was a miracle that deceased got out after .the accident. Had there been reasonable, meansof egress the accident would ; not have been so bad. Subse.quciit investigation showed that deceased must have slackened. tho . nuts too much, six half-turns haying been made. Tho coroner recorded a verdict -that.death was caused by shock;' tho result of severe .scalds . arising from escaping of. steam from a safety, valve, and that in his opinion want of. snfficicnt means of exit caused the serious results of the accident. :1 , OLD MAN FOUND DEAD.
