AMERICAN FOREST FIRES.
»_ FLAMES MOVING RAPIDLY. NINE HUNDRED TROOPS REPORTED MISSING. HOSPITAL PATIENTS LOST. By Telegraph-Press Associatlon-Oopyrieht. New York, August 23. The forest fires in Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Montana arc still raging. The wind is blowing a galo,.and in some places the flanies aro travelling at a speed of a mile an hour. The township of Thompson, Moutana* is threatened. " ■ • Six hundred soldiers who left for Thompson Falls on Saturday last to fight the flames are missing; likewise 300 troops who went to the Wliito Pine forests, Northern' Idaho. Many other persons have been reported as missing. They are mostly fire-fighters and volunteers who were carrying supplies to forest camps on the Northern Pacific tramway. Forty-two patients and nineteen Sisters, of Charity, who were fleeing from tho town of Wallace, were caught in the burning forest and are believed to have perished. 1 It is thought the fires were started by men who Loped that the Government- would engage them at big wages to. fight the flames.
