REGISTERED LETTERS.
. LIABILITY OF THE GJP.O. 4. correspondent ("E.L.H."), who vaA interested in The Dominion's report of the reference in the House to the bank notes lost on the Penguin, states that ho would like to know, what responsibility the.General Post Office undertook'in the case of a lost registered letter. Tho answer is, practically—"None." Clause 10 of the conditions referring to registered articles says: "In the event of the loss of an inland registered letter or a registered letter from any country with which New Zealand has a reciprocal arrangement as to : indemnities, the PostmasterGeneral consents to be liable to puy a sum not exceeding £2 (under certain conditions)." which clearly indicates that the liability undertaken amounts to very little. The real advantage of registering a letter (or package) is that it passes along under receipt,' and that, if lost, the Department is aware who is responsible, knowing the identity of-the last person to give a receipt. It is not • generally known that valuable articles sent in unregistered letters, inland or Australian, oven though they are posted without registration, aro treated as registered, and are charged double the registration fee in addition to the ordinary postage, so that those who post away valuable articles unregistered, are practising : a very costly economy.
