ONCE HAILED, NOW STONED.
THE ARBITRATION ACT. A.number of Labour delegates who aw in Wellington attending \ the New Zealand Federation Conference addressed -a considerable gathering of watorsido workers and others at the Queen's Statue yesterday, during the dinner-hour. In general character the speeches, which were quietly received, were an appeal to the workers to band together in : a class-conscious way and not to pin their faith to existing institutions. A Labour party, one speaker declared, unless backed up and controlled by an effectual Federation of Labour, was ' a valueless thing. Incidentally the Arbi-' - tration Act was repudiated with scant . ceremony. ,It was declared that the Act, ; although its promoters were well-mean- ; ing men, had signally failed in achiev- \ ing the purpose at which they had aimed. As an argument supporting this view there was advanced an allegation that employers, as a class, were now keenly desirous of retaining tho Act on thb Statute Book.
