CITY CORPORATION.

IMPENDING BY-ELECTION. Interest is already being manifested in the forthcoming by-election to. fill vacancies on tile City Council, caused by the death of Councillor J. J. Device and the resignation of Councillor 'I'. Ballinger. A number of candidates have notified their decision to stand, and olhert aro considering the matter. There is every indication that- a brisk contest will eventuate,

Candidates who have already announced their determination to ■ stand are: Alessrs. W..'E. P. Barber, James Spee'd, and ±i. W. J. Coleridge. Among those who have been approached in the matter, and are considering the advisability of coming forward as candidates may be enumerated: Mr. James Dykes, wnc* topped the list of defeated candidates at tiie last general election, ex-Couucillor Murdoch, Messrs. L. M'Kenzie, W. E. Bennett, and A'. H. Fullford (Brooklyn). The by-election will bo held on September 8. Nominations close on September 2. The Labour party will in all likelihood make a vigorous attempt to capture, the vacjnt seats. The Management Committee of the Trades Council has been instructed to report to the latter body as to the advisability of putting forward candidates. 'The—-Management Committee meets on Wednesday, and the council on Thursday, so that the determination of the Labour party will be made known at an early date. In the event of the report being favourable, a special meeting of Trades Council representatives and representatives of outside unions will be called to select two candidates.

In conversation . yesterday with a Dominion representative, Air. E. J. Carey, president of the Trades Council,.contended that Labour had in every way established its right to representation on local bodies. Labour men, he claimed, !had in various countries demonstrated that they were fully as expert in . the management of municipal, affairs as the nominees of other classes' in the community.
