JUSTICES' ASSOCIATION
SUGGESTION' FOR WELLINGTON. Sir. I. Salek, of Wellington, who just returned from a trip to Australia, is a Justice of tho Peace. During a visit to Adelaide he was interested to learn that there was in existence a justices' association; founded as long ago as 189S, formally inaugurated by Chief Justice Way, and still flourishing.' In connection with tliu association a paper entitled "Tho Honorary Magistrate" is published quarterly, in which are published all kinds of. interesting law points in connection with Court cases, inquests, and tho signing of documents. This appears to be a very happy medium for the dissemination of information likely to bo of value to justices of the peace. Mr. Salck is of opinion that tho formation of a similar association would be highly educative and . useful to our justices, and if a little journal were published on the lines of tho South Australian "Honorary Magistrate" that usefulness would be considerably increased. For the benefit of those interested we publish the objects of the Adelaide Justices' Association. They are as follow: — (a) To promote, support, and protect the status and interests of Justices of the Peace generally. (b) To promote honorable practice, to repress malpractive, to settle disputes, and .to decide all questions of'usage or courtesy between justices. (c) To consider all questions affecting the inlerests of Justices of the Peace, and to initiate and watch over, and, if necessary; to petition Parliament, or promote deputations in relation to measures affecting justices, and to pro'cure changes of law or practice, and the promotion of improvements in principles and administration of law. (d), To acquire by purchase, donation, or otherwise a library, and to maintain, extend, and improve such library. . (e) To provide rooms and other conveniences for the holding of meetings of members of the association and for use" by members, and to furnish and maintain the same, and to permit the same to be used by members of the said association, either, gratuitously or upon such terms as shall be agreed upon. ■'.",'•'.' (f) To acquire by purchase, taking on lease, or otherwise; lands and buildings, and all other property, real and personal, which tho for the purpose ■ .thereof,;. may from time to time think proper to. acquire, and which may lawfully be held, and to resell, mortgage, lease, underlease, sublet, surrender, or dispose of such property, and to -erect upon any such- land any building for the purposes of tho association, and, to alter-or add to any building erected upon, any: such land. (g) ■To promote information on subjects of interest to Justices of the Peace by the publication and issue of newspapers, magazines, or periodicals, lectures, discussions, hooks, correspondence with public bodies and individuals, or. otherwise. (h) To invest the moneys of the; association ' riot . immediately required upon such' securities or. otherwise in such manner as may from time to time be determined. ; .' ' ■'■ (i) To promote and encourago the distribution of legal and other literature affecting Justices of the Peace.
