In connection with the' proposed new traffic bridgo across the river the .Wanganui Borough Council has received from the American Bridge Company a reply to a letter sent last April with a plan and rough estimate for a bridge FoUr feet wider, and far more attractive, in appearance than that proposed by the Public Works Department's plan. The total cost of the material, c.iX, is £12,660. The matter will be considered at the next meeting of the council. : Lively interest has been aroused among both townspeople and farmers by the meeting called oy the Mayor for next week to consider tho establishment of the sugar-beet industry here, and a large" attendance .js expected. There will be a ,large /amount of bush felled in the inland Kai-jivi district this year. The contracts already let and reported total cloae on 94,000 acres, and there is a keen demand for bushmen. A successful reunion of Welshmen of this district.was held last night, being very largely attended. Mr. John Jones, Mayor of Wan'ganui ]i!ast; was in the chair. The gathering was .of an informal nature, tho only toast being that of Mr. Lloyd-George. A committee was set iip to arrange for a reunion to be held annually on. St. David's Day, and it was decided to support the Wellington Welsh Society's request to the Government to have the day added to the list of public holidays'. ' ' ' The Wairoa Mounted Rifles held their annual ball last evening when visitors were present from all parts of the coast. During the evening Mr. G. V. Sergeant Palmer wan also presented with a twelves-ear;;' long-service medal. A sea-faring man named Daniel Jones appeared before the S.M. this morning to explain his presence in a railway truck in the goods shed last night. It appears that tho man was unable to find work and was tramping from Wellington to Wanganui. Arriving at Turakina at dusk he saw a chance of a cheap ride, and slipped into a truck. He found that the truck was loaded with fruit, of which he made his supper, and fell asleep, being, disturbed when the truck Was being unloaded at its destination. The man thereupon made an immediate bolt, but was afterwards arrested. Tim police, not pressing the charge, the S.M. warned the accused and said he would givo him a chance by convicting and discharging him. For some time- there has been a dispute between the Wanganui Borough Council and the Railway Department, over the ownership of land in Churton Street, over.which the railway ran before bring diverted to its present line. Tho council claimed that tho Department undertook to put the land in repair and hand it over when tho line was takou up. A letter has now been received from the Minister for Railways stating that after looking up tho records he finds that the' Department undertook to hand over only a small portion of the land, which bad already been done, but not to put any in repair. Tho rest of the land the Department will keep, the Minister saying that the Department has already done all it promised, if not more.
