THE BROOKLYN CLUB. The- Brooklyn Club held then usual weekly- run from Tkorndon Baths on Saturday afternoon, and despite the Inclemency'of the weather 15 members took part. F. Hodson and J; Don, two of the speediest mombers, were sent out wjth the paper, while the pack' was divided into a fast and slow, lot, controlled by P. Wilton and -It. Hanger respectively. Tho route led from tho rendezvous along t-lio Esplanade, and thence by road to Kaiwarra. Tho Kaiwarra Gorge was traversed for a .- short distance, the paper then leading over tlio hills to Ngaio. The main road was followed until tho point above Ngahauranga was reached, and, after a quick descent down the.rocky hill, an even pace was kept until Kaiwarra was again picked up. Prom this point a handicap "run in" was held, T. Barnes just beating C. Coad by inches, with W. Beaven close up third; This ran proved to bo one of the best so far held, and good training was derived on account of the mixed nature of tho country. Next Saturday's run will be held from Miramar tram terminus at 3 p.m., when the final tost will bo held for tho purpose of selecting a team to represent tho club at tho Now Zealand Cross-country Championships at Invcrcargill on September 7.
A RUN.FROM BROOKLYN. A fair muster of members of tho Wellington Club assembled at Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon to take part in the usual weekly run. The selection of a course and regulation of paco was in the hands of F. Wilton, C. Lamberg being in charge of the pack. After ascending the Sugar' Loaf ,; the hills on the western side .of Brooklyn were followed due south to the beach at the bottom of Happy • Valley. A return to Brooklyn was made 'along the ridges overlooking Island Bay. A run in 0f.250 .yards was won by T. Farrington, C. Rowberry second, Wilton and Lainberg running a dead-heat for third place. Tho members were afterwards entertained at tea by Mr. and Mrs. A. 11. Fulford. Good entries have been received for tho championship, which is to be decided over a one lap almost Hat course of five miles at Miramar next Saturday. . WELLINGTON CLUB. A meeting of the committee-of tho AVollington Harriers was held on Saturday, tho president, Mr. W. H. Bennett; being in tho chair. A letter was received, from the AVollington Centro N.Z.A.A.A. anent tho proposal to dispatch a team from Wellington to tho annual cross-country
championship of Now Zealand, to bo held at lnvercargill on September 7. The centre proposed holding an iutorclub test race in conjunction with the club's 'annual championship race at Miramar nest Saturday, a team to be picked by Mr. AV. H. Pollock on the result of this event; also that the nomination feo of 10s. would' be paid by the centre, which was not in a sufficiently strong financial position to assist in tho payment of travelling expenses of tho selected team. The chairman adversely commented on tho action of the centre in making so paltry an offer, after the action of the Wellington Harriers in representing the centre in last year's race at Timaru, entirely at their own expense. It appeared that so long as harriers were willing to pay their own expenses to these meetings they would receive no assistance from the centre, which body, however, was always prepared to go to a big expense in dispatching a team to the championship meetings during the summer season. Other speakers contended that greater encouragement should be given by the centre to tho harrier clubs of the city, in view of the good which these clubs wore doing for the sport. •It was finally resolved to , suggest that the test race should bo held on the following Saturday, only those members who were able and willing to go to lnvercargill at their own expense to take part. This test is to be open to members of both the Wellington and Brooklyn Clubs. Officials wcro appointed for tho championship race next Saturday, and arrangements in connection with tho club's ten-milo handicap wore made. It was decided to give trophies for first and second places, as well as for fastest time. Offers of trophies from Mr. W. H. Bennett for a sealed handicap race and from Mr. H. J. Pollock for an .aggregate-' prizo were accepted with thanks. It was decided to write to the Wellington Centre, asking that arrangc'ments for conducting the annual teams' road race should be taken in hand as early as possible. Subsequently a .conference' was held with representatives of the Brooklyn Harriers, with a viow to organising a team to go south. It was decided to endeavour to send a combination if sufficient men would go, on tiro conditions laicl down by the centre.
