NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By Gr,RNCox.2 The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting will bo continued at Riccorton. to-day, when the Grand National Hurdles will be decided. The following arc the probable starters and riders in this event:—Pnisano, 12st. lib. (W. Young); Compass, list. filb. (C. Cochrane); Prophet. 1151.,21b. (C. Cress) ;Tauiva, list. lib. (H. Rotter); Aorangi, !)st. 4lli. (.T. Heveock): Waitapu, 9st. 3l'b. (C. O'Neill); and Appin, 9st.'(J. PercivaJj. The Trentham trainer, .J. Lowe, is leaving Kiccarton to-night, and will sail for Sydney to-morrow, Iney was sent home on Monday, having cone lame whilst working at Kiccarton. Coroniform was finishing very strongly at the end of the Avouhcad Handicap on Tuesday, and had the race been a little further he would have troubled the winner. In the mile hack race to-day ho will be ridden by K. W. King. As showing
the quality of tho colt, it may be mentioned . that, he 'finished with, .Bonny Glen in a gallop over a mile last week. lion Ami was responsible for a very smurt gallop over five furlongs at Biccartou yesterday. She will ho ridden by A. Oliver in the August Handicap to-day. The meeting of ■ Paisano and Tauira in the Grand National Hurdles to-day will be full of interest. ' Tho top-weight is favourite, and it is snid that he is a much better horse than when ho raced at Trcnthnm, where lie was supposed to be short of \tork. ■Though Lovell is only receiving Sib. from the top-weight, Kiatere, his running in the big steeplechase will tend to make him a favourite for tho Beaufort Steeples. Tyrant was given a schooling task over four' fences yesterday morning.' and acquitted himself welii He is u bold jumper; anil, being gifted with a good amount of pace, it will be hard work for Howiek and Co. to'shako him off. Dreadlesa was generally supposed to bo tho unlucky camlidalo in the Winter Cup, and returned visitors from Kiccarton suy that the Karamu representative was galloping over overything at the final stages, of the, handicap. She has only boon raised some 711 i. for to-day's big handicap. Coroniform and Mediterranean will not be started in tho Selling Race . to-day. ■The'fact that the winner of the race would be out of hack class is probably the reason of their .defection. A thoroughbred yearling filly, by Cyrus from' Star Queen, will bo sold by. public auction on Saturday next, by Messrs. A. h. Wilson and Co., at their toouis, 2G. Brandon Street. W. Young, •who will rido Paisano in the' Grand National Hurdles to-day, had the winning mount on Shrapnel in 1907. Crueinella, who arrived in Sydney early this week, is about tho best typo o£ mare that has yet come over from the Dominion (snys the "Arrow"), and those New Zealanders who know her well claim she is every bit as good as she looks. Well, if she is up to the standard of Solution she will pay her way. Moorilla,. the , three-year-old- sister to Lady Medallist, won the Kogarah Stakes at Moorefield (Sydney) on July 30. Motoa, who won the Valley Handicap at.Moonee Valley Races on July 30, is now ono of the well-backed candidates for the Epsom Handicap. The New Zealand pony Aurifcra, who won races in Sydney and Brisbane, has been sold to the Queensland owner, Mr. M'Dougal, • for £145. Aurifera's racing days are now probably over, as it is the present intention o£ her now owner to send her to the stud, this season. FIXTURES. August 11 and 13.—C.J.C. Grand National. Very high barometric pressure has provailed everywhere, pressure having increased considerably in the north during the night, with strong southerly winds. Present indications are for northerly winds freshening strong to gale southward of New Plymouth and Napier, aud with increasing cloudiness, bringing rain and unsettled weather, from an area of low pressure approaching..from the westward. Conditions are at present more settled in the north, and moderate easterly windß will urobubly prevail.
