Cargo brought by the vessel included:—l2so sacks manure, 200 bags salt, 371 drums carbide, 400 boxes sultanas, 130 casks peel, 583 pieces timber, SCO packages tea, 150 rolls paper, 74 rolls lead, 183 melpns, 2501 cases fruit (lemons, pines, passion, mandarines, anu oranges) and a large ouantity of sundries; also transhipments ex Zieten, Kiel, Persic' Itonus, and Kooyong. APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME. An apprenticeship scheme introduced by the Shipping Federation (Great Britain) about five years ago. is stated, to have met with such success that the federation is now in.a. position to restrict and control the number of foreigners employed in British shins. . A statement from 'the Newcastle (U.K.) office of the federation says that whereas before 1905 the number of apprentices' indentures had'fallen to the low figure of 5069, from then on, under tho schoine, it had .steadily risen, being 5446 in 1907, and very much more to-day. In round figures 10,000 boys had offered themselves for. employment at sea to the federation's officers, and of thcEO 3000 had been engaged. The supply of British boys for the sea, it is demonstrated, according to the federation's figures, is more than equal to the demand. LIQUID F/OEL ADOPTION. ■ •.' The decision of the British Admiralty to utilise crude petroleum as the sole fuel in the special service ocean destroyers, and also as an auxiliary to coal in the latest battleships and cruisers, has aroused the attention of steamship owners to the question of a more general adoption of liquid fuel. The- recent boom in oilproducing enterprises and the discovery of now sources of supply, promise to lower the price of oil considerably; and if this comes to pass it is believed that there will bo many ventures with oil fuel, par: Ocularly on vessels. engaged on routes where coal has a high selling value. Australia is at present visited by but few stcamera driven by liquid fuel, but such vessels ns arrive there under this method of propulsion all cive most favourable reports concerning it. The steamers of the Royal Dntch Packet Company supply instances. ' They have always an ample supply ot steam, and are ready lor. every

emergency. Many advantages are claimed for oil fuel, the most striking amongst them being economy. Even at the present selling price it is computed that- a, vessel like the Jlauretania could save on the round trip from New York to Liverpool and back the very considerable sum of £12,000 by using oil in. preference to coal.. Cleanliness—always an linsortant factoris another of the ■ advantages gained by. the use of oil. NOTES'ON-FREIGHT. By the Mongolia, Saturday's mail steamer (saya the "Commercial News"), over UGO bales of wool were shipped at gd. and 3d., and during the week several other, heavy shipments were niadoat-Jd.. o.nd Jd., There is still a fair amount of wool available, but it is all booked. Meat—This' lino 1b a .puzzle now. Shippers, are asking to be released from engagements, both in New. South Wales-and Victoria, but Queensland is still in the swim. Tho Mongolia at the last moment found room for some rabbits, and agents for other lines have already cast glances In this direction now that the pressure on refrigerator space is relieved. . • LEAVING BT THE TAINUf.
