NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(Hi GtKNCOI.) •.The Grand National- Steeplechase will be decided at Eiccarton this afternoon. Among tho mares to be mated with Morioform this season is Castorline, dam of the brilliant Soultline. ,; "31r.-:A'; E-.:iWhyte, secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, left for Cliristchurch. last night to be present at the. Grand National meeting. '.-. .'•' ■ Cohtorp;"by''Conqueror, won' tho hurdle race at the Warwick Farm (Sydney) meeting-on August ; 1. . ' . Carbine, Poseidon, and Wakeful are tho only Australian horses that have won more money than Prince TFoote. Elysian. is again in work at Ellerslie, but has, so : fur beea restricted to easy .exercise. " There are 130 Horses in work at EllersHβ at tUe present time.. I\ Macmanemin, the well-known Auckland trainer, passed 'through Wellington on the way to tho Grand National meeting last night. The Greenmeadows trainer; J. M'Laugklin, left, for Hicearton. last night. Mr. A. F. Douglas, the Hawke's Bay owner, left for the south last night, to be present at the Grand National meeting. Other well-known owners . leaving for Riccarton were Mr. H. Whitney and Mr. J. Bull. • • ■ That useful little handbook "Miller's; Sporting Pamphlet and Athletic Eecord" is to hand. This year's edition includes the revised list of the best performances on record in all branches of sport; performances of horses engaged in the big spring handicaps; entries and weights for various important races; placed horses in principal Australian races; and a budget of miscellaneous information. The illustrations include Princo Foote (winner of Melbourne Cup, etc.), and W. H. M'Lachlan, the leading horseman in Australia. Master Soult was to be shipped- from Auckland last night by the Wimmera for Sydney. The champion is at present in great heart (says the "Star") aud will need very little galloping to fit him for his engagements on tho other side. Nothing has yet been definitely decided as to who will havo the mount on Master Soult.' An effort was made to secure W. H. M'lidchlan's services, but that ho-rseman has been retained to ride Aborigine in his engagements, and could not accept the mount when that horse was not engaged. There is every-probability that the Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, will journey across and ride Master Soult at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting, but as mentioned above, nothing definite has yet been decided. ; The little .Auckland horse Prophet has been getting through some exceptionally fine gallons at Riccarton, and his supporters are very confident that ho will at least show the way to Tauira and Paisano on ■• Thursday. He is to bo given,a gallop in the Jumpers' Plat Eace to-day, and will be ridden by C. Cress. There has been a rush on Kiatero during tho last couplo of days, and apparently the old Castor gelding is back to his best form. In well-informed' circles it is considered certain that he will start favourite in the big stceplechaso to-day. Lionheart, Nero, aikl Paritutu have all been showing signs of unsoundnessduring their track essays at Riccarton. White Cockade is now partly recovered from his cold, but he can hardly be at his best in tho. National Hurdles on Thursday. . The. owner of Waiono and Tauira yesterday supported his horses to win the double at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, which opens at Riccarton to-day. In-tho Hunters' Hurdles to-day, the top weight Totika will be ridden" by J. Jones. Mr. Hannon's horses arc generally ridden by P. Brady, but tho Auckland horseman is stated to bo unable to hold Totika, who is a very hard 1 puller, and possessed of a lot of pace. . • Mahuta ran soven furlongs in lmin. 32scc. on Friday, and is coming on very fast. Ho is in the Trial Hurdles to-day, and will be ridden by E. Murtngh. Scotch Plnid ran two good races at Trentham, and, judging by her., track gallops 'at ■Riccarton, she has improved since then. J. Pine will have the mount on Mr. Hart's mare in the final event at Riccarton to-day. The following are the starters and their riders in the Winter Cup :—Penates, list. 9lb. (C. Jenkins)! I.os Angeles, list. Mb. (W. Holmes); North-East, list.-. 21b (W. Young); St. Aidan, 10st. 111b. (11. Donovan); Wauchopo, lOst. 51b. (U. Gray); Wimmera, lOst. 51b. (K. Hatch); Nyland, lOst. 11b.
