HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tha ordinary meeting, of HlO Hutt Borough Council was held-last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), Councillors Baldwin, Mncnskill, Barlow, Kempthovne, Anson, Hawthorn, Clere, and Penrce. •.The'WeUinßtpn Hospital and Charitable Aid Board advised that they had relieved the council of charitable administration es from July 28. One application for drainage assistance , was granted. The council's balance-sheet was adopted and the Mayor authorised to sign it. A letter was received . from Mr. N. Tredinick, claiming JKO compensation for alleged damage done to his property whilst the council's employees ivere engaged with the Everest Creek diversion. - It was resolved that the Works Committee and the Mayor should inspect the - property in. Question. The clerk was also instructed to ask the claimant for particulars of tho alleged damage dono. ■■•> ■ ■ Mr. ,T. Dawpon inquired whether the suspension bridge, designed- by him, was giving satisfaction, and if so-asking for a testimonial to that-.effect. The engineer said that up to the present time the bridge had given every satisfaction. It was resolved to forward a letter, to Mr. Dawson in accordance with the engineer's report. ' - .. ' Two anonymous letters were received, but" were not read as thb council had already passed a resolution not to discuss, anonymous correspondence/Tho caretaker of tho Recreation Ground reported that (lowers x had been picked, and also that the entrance gates had been forced o'pen. ' It was decided to refer the matter to the police. Councillor Clere moved: "That the resolution passed on June 16, instructing the engineer, to erect two gas lamps, one at each end of the Hutt Bridge, bo rescinded.—Carried. Councillor Baldwin moved: That a special meeting of the- council bo held at 7.30 p.m. on August 29 for tho purpose of passing a resolution amending and adding to the Consolidated Building By-lnw ISO! Amendment By-lnw (Brick Area), 1905.-Carried. ■ . < The Works Committee reported that certain repairs should be gone on with as soon as possible. It was resolved to instruct the engineer to proceed with tho work as far as funds would allow/ , The librarian reported a decrease in subscribers, and also in tho number of books issued in July, 1910, as against July, 1909. . • ■ : ■ The engineer reported that satisfactory progress was being maintained with tho Everest's Creek diversion works. Tho culvert, was now.- complete with the exception of closing in'the , ."opening left for the removal of the centre, etc. The western intake was and seven and a half chains of the pipe culvert hadbeen laid along tho Main Hutt Road. Estimated cost, expenditure to date, .£2113 13s. lid. Seven connections had been added to tlie water main, making the total Cll to date. Two new gas services/had;'been installed, aiid a gas main was being laid in the Old' Military Road. In reforenco to % a surface drain 'in Park Avenue, the engineer reported that a survey had been made, and a drain could be put in to give tho required relief from surface water at an estimated cost of .£50.. The . preparation of footpaths in Alicetown for tarring purposes was nearly completed. . Metalling and repairs to Main. Hutt Road wero' proceeding. Granite setts had been -laid round the firc-phigs from Waiwehi Road to the bridge.- The drain in tho back Waiwetu Road had been deepened. Expenditure for past fortnight, JHI94 os.-Id.
