. - Masterton, August 5. A civil action was heard in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton yesterday, iii which » Native named Paku claimed £17 damages from George Moore, jun.., farmer, of Eparaima, for failing to employ him as a shearer last season after he- had, as alleged, been employed by an agent of the defendant. For the dct'enco-it was alleged that no authority had boon given' to employ the plaintiff, and, after hearing evidence, Lis Worship non-suited plaintiff, with £9 10s. costs.
Goud work is being done by tno Maori councils of thn Dominion in compelling the registration of the dogs which congregate .in such numbers at the kaingas. So far, 250 animals have been registered by the officer of th« Rongokako Maori Council, which. has jurisdiction over the Masterton district. I'll.the Magistrate's Court'this morning a half-casto drover named Artuur Brightwell was fined 7s. 6d., and costs £2 (is... for failink to resistor three dogs in his possession. Silas Rowley was fined 55., and 7s. costs, in the Maeist-rate's Court this morning for riding a bicycle after sunset without lights. For riding a bicyclo on a footpath, Arthur Boyd was lined 55., and 7s.i costs, and . Claude Valler was convicted only. Jack M'Laughiin was called upon to pay os., ami 7s. costs, for ridimi n motor-cyclo on t)i<i footpath. The Masterton branch of' the Labour parly has received a' letter from Mr. T. '10. Xnyloiv 31.1'., stating that ho will most likely visit this township and address a public meeting after tho session. The, following have been elected members of the executive of the Masterton branch : —Messrs. P. Smith, A. Gardner, A. M'Lco.d, A. Collie, F. Langston, D. Threa'dwell, F. Ford, E. Edwards, J. Sliackleton, and A. Rippon. Mr. D. llebenton gave an address before the members of St.' Matthtw's Club on Wednesday uight on the question: "Is Gro.n*. nn'tnii. Tlocßflcilt?;' Mr. Gerald Branson has promised to giva a paper on.'. 1 A Tour Through Australia"' at the next meeting. Awflhnr case under the I/iu.-nMhg Art waG heard in the Magistrate's Court this when William Redmond, licensee of the Club Hotel in Carterton, was charged with supplying liquor without furnishing the clerk of tho Court t.ho full address of tl'« person to whom the liquor was supplied. Mr. Lnwry appeared for defendant, and entered « plea of not guilty. The evidence of tho police was to the effect that a caso of whisky had been delivered by defendant to a person who had signed his name as "T. Boyle, Masterton." The polico lnvd endeavoured to find this man Boyle, but had failed. It was contended that it more explicit address should have been given. During the hearing of the case a man-named Frank Boyle appeared in Court, and stated that he was the person who had purchased and signed for tho whisky. His Worship naid that, in view of the fact that a fictitious name had not been given, and that the person who had signed for the whisky was traceablo, the information would be dismissed.
