SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP

ARNST CONFIDENT. By.Telegraph-i'rc»3 Association—Copyright. Sydney, August <j. -R:- has: cabled-to-the "Sun" that lie 1 has Kgned the-articles for the race- with Barry; uuder the . ■ world's championship rules, not tho Thames rules.. ;• '.- After, watching Barry at work, ho says he;can retain the title. Barry was not in championship form. >' THAMES-AND AUSTRALIAN RULES. linder ths x -Thames, conditions a sculler is allowed to receive directions from a man on a following steamer us to the coum- he should steer. In the old rules ot.ttie ciiampioiishii) there is no' such provision. Tnis is-probably the poiut on .which Arnst . has . teen insistent. In the Australian'championship boat laws the most important rule is No. G as iollows:—"A sculler's proper course is such a course as will enable him to reach the-winning post in the shortest possible time, provided that he allow aniplo' water for-'the other competitor to steer his proper course on the side on which such competitor started when such competitor is in a position to enforce his right to such water. Any sculler failing to Keap his proper course does so at his psni hi the event of a foul occurring.'" A MESSAGE' FROM RHODESIA. - (Ey Telcxraiilh-i'rc-sa. Association.) ' Christchurch, August 6. A cable message, received to-day,from Rhodesia by tho secretary of Arnst's supporters, states that, in the approaching.match between. Arnst and Barry, both have signed articles that the conJ test shall bo governed by world's championship conditions. In Barry's challenge to Arnst, he stipulated that the race'should be rowed under Thames championship rules, to which Arnst refused' to agree. Evidently, on tho arrival of . Dr. Thacker and Mr. J. H. I'arker, of Christchurch, at Livingstone {Africa), matters have been amicably arranged to suit , both parties. The cable message'also states that Arnst's training operations are very satisfactory.

WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB. The annual general meeting of tho Wellington' Rowing Club, which was adjourned from Friday, week last on account of the necessary quorum of t\Venty-fivo membors not being present, was held last evening at the club's shed. , Mr. W. J. Gaudin (club captain) presided over a good attend-, ante of members. Tho annual report and balance-sheet, already published, were adopted. The following officers were clccted for tho ensuing season:—President, Mr. W. Nidd; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Hutchoßon, 'J. G. W. Aitken, T, W. Hislop, J. Trevor, W. Allan, W. J. Ferkins, E. Morris, and W. H. P. Barber; captain, W. .J. Gaudin (re-elected); : vice-captain, A. Jackson; lion, secretary, U. Matheson; boil, treasurer, G. Cairns: committee, Messrs. G. Butler, E. Cainis, P. Davey, W. Hinchcliffe, H. M'Kinley, B! Shaw, and C. R. Furness; Selection Committee, Messrs. H. A. M'Kinley, A. Jackson, and C. R. Furness-; Race Committee, Messrs. B. Shaw, E. Butler, and A. Body j delegates to Wellington Bowing Association, Messrs. A. J. Bishop, W. Nidd. and W. A. Gemmell; auditors, Messrs. G. Read and A. J. Bishop. Mr. W. G. Shilling moved that one of the rules be deleted, and the following substituted: "That entrance fees must bo paid before nominations close. No member shall bo selected in any nrew unless his entrance fee bo paid to the officer appointed, by the committee to receive the fees." Discussion ensued, and the consensus of opinion was that the proposed rule would have a beneficial effect and considerably lighten the burden 011 the treasurer., The motion was consequently oarrioa. Mr. Shilling moved to add to the rules: "Saturday afternoon club races shall be rowed to a finish, unless, in the opinion of the captain, officer in charge, or. Race Committee, another course is preferable. Tho winning crew in the semi-final heat may, 011 appeal, have the filial rowed on Monday, or on the first fine evening.'' Tho motion evoked much discussion, and opinions were divided on the question. It was pointed out that under present conditions a crew drawing a byo in the heat had a decided advantage in tho final over a crew that had rowed in the heat.. . . Mr.- G. Butler moved as an amendment: "That the races bo rowed over two ■ Saturdays, instead of on tho first fine night." , The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion, with the additional words, "no training 1 to bo allowed in tho meantime," was carried. Messrs. J. Meek, G. Jones, and A. Barry were appointed to co-operate with the committee for the purpose of making arrangements for a euchre party. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers and the chairman concluded the meeting.
