STUDY OF ASTRONOMY.
A WELLINGTON MOVEMENT. ■.. . For some time the Wellington Philo* sophical Society, has had under consideration the formation of an astronomical section. A committee was set up to go into tho matter, and last night the following recommendations were placed beforo tho society:That an astronomical section should be formed. . ... That the oujects of the section should be the establishment of an observatory, in or about Wellington, and the promotion of the study of astronomicar subjects generally. That a fnnd should be established for' promoting the objects of the Carter bequest and for rendering it available as soon as possible. That the question of promoting such a memorial should be brought before the public, and that, for. this purpose a committee should be formed including prominent citizens in conjunction with members of tho Philosophical Society. Mr. G. Hogbcn thought that they should have some idea of the cost of running an observatory before being asked to decide. He did not think many were aware of the expense. A motion . to form an astronomical section .was passed without being discussed.
The matter of electing officers will be dealt with later by the members of the section.
