A RAILWAY ROUTE.
BETWEEN UPPER MUTT AND ' WAIKANAE. The value of the Akatarawa-Waikaiine railway. route as against the present' Johusonville-Porirua route was the sub' joct of it reply by the Hon. J. A. Millar to Mr. Wiliord yesterday. Tho Minister stated that the question of a railway, between Upper Hutt and Waikanae was looked into at the time the Wellington to Foxtun (now Wollington-M'anawatH). railway w.'is authorised, and the opinion arrived at was that the Hue via Johnson-, ville and Porirua was much superior i» the line via Akatarawa and Waikaiw-n. If, therefore, the suggested lino is intended as.an easier route for. a railw.vy between Wellington mid Wailcanae, it would swin that the facts are not fav--ui-able thereto. Mr. J. l>. Maxwell, who was then in the Public Works Department, reported that the height trains would have to rise bv tlie AkatarawaWaikanae route w'd be 1137 ft., against 520 ft. by the Johusonvillc-Porirun route. Moreover, the latter route was both shorter and less expensive than the former. If, however, a connection between the east and west coasts is desira) (as would appear from the question), such connection is already supplied by the Woodville-Palmerston line, ■•
