A BIG EARTH-FALL

SLIP AT MARANUI QUARRY. A visit to tho corporation quarry be« yond Maranui yesterday disclosed the fact that the slip which took place there on Friday last (and referred; to in. Thb Dominion yesterday) was a big one, though its occurrence was not unexpecu.-d. Abut a ccuple of days prevousy lomtf ominous cracks appeared on the cuff overhanging tho Milestone quarry, down in. which the corporation gangs were working, and the men were withdrawn to a safer spot, as the collapse of the mass aTjovo seemed imminent. A cable tramway runs down to the quarry bottom", now about 20 feet below the level of the road, where a splendid' stratum of bluestone is being worlied. About 1 a.m. on Friday the mass above gave way, . apd crashed into the quarry, burying the tramline, littering the immediate surroundings with'boulders, rotten rock, and rubble, and putting an effectual stop to the quarrying operations. :The fall laid bare the rock face on either side of the cliff, and when the debris has been cleared away—it will take some work of the quarrymen will be much simpler and less dangerous. Another result of the fall has been some damage to adjacent property, owned by Mr. John Gell, and the question of compensation will no doubt have to be settled. '
