THE ACCESSION OATH.
■ STATEMENT BY THE PB.TiMTTO. Some days ago Mr. Myers, M.P. for Auckland East,' put a question in' the House as follows:—"Will the Government bring before the House a motion that a respectful address be presented to his Excellency tho Governor, requesting Mm to ask his Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies to convey to his Majesty tho King tho desire of this House that an alteration should be made in the Accession Declaration, so as to expunge therefrom tho words reflecting on the Roman Catholic religion, which are offensive to tho feelings of millions of his Majesty's subjects?"
The Prime Minister replied yesterday as follows:—"A Bill giving'effect to what tho honourable gentleman desires has passed its second reading and also gonethrough the Committee stage of the House of Commons, and seems therefore certain to pass. Under these, circumstances any action with the object of assisting the measure does not now seem necessary, but should it later on be found desirable to elicit the opinion of member of the New Zealand Parliament, the opportunity desired will bo given."
