MR. DINNIE'S NEW POSITION.
LAND SETTLEMENT WOKE. (By Telegraph.—Special Auckland, August 2. Tho new president of the i'okeran Maori Land Board (Mr. W. Dinnie) relumed to Auckland on Saturday from a trip north, where he arranged for the formation of roads in Te Karae Block, ICohukohu, near Hokianga. A sum of .fIiOOO is to be expended in roading, but it is said that twice that amount could bo profitably spent in properly opening the area, which is 30,000 acres in extent. The land'was vested in the'board under tho Act of 1005, and was cut up aud leased lost year. Ealf of the sections available for leasing have already been taken up, aud the idea is to open up all the sections. A good class of settlers has so far been obtained. The, southern contingent, includes five men from Christchurch and seven from Wellington. The block is described as good catUe-carrying country. A lot of it is in heavy bush, ami it ia stated that there is 12,(l(l0,000ft. of milling timber. The main road through the block will reduce the distance between the Broadwood Settlement and Hokianga Vvy seven to eight miles.
