"PEGGING AWAY."

THE EAST COAST RAILWAY. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent ~ Napier, August 2. At a meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, Mr. H. A. Mossman said he had heard on good authority that tha East Coast railway would not be dealt with this year. Ho (the speaker) said that the Uon. E. M'Kenzie had committed himself to the proposal when deputationised at Napier. He certainly considered tho Minister had definitely committed himself. The chairman (Mr. E. H". • Williams) agreed that the Minister had committed himself as far as a politician could. Hβ thought that one of the reasons for not ■proceeding with the railway was that the Government, haii not got the money. Mr. John suggested "pegging away" so es to keep the matter before the Government, so that when the money was in hand their claims would be remembered. . ■ . ' The chairman stated that he certainly ftould not oppose the policy of "pegging away,"- but he did not know that it would bo of any use, because the Government would give money to the constituency they desired to woo. On the motion of Messrs. J. A. Frasei <ind E. Basil Jones it was decided "That from information received this Chamber /is of opinion that tho matter of the pushing on of tho East Coast railway is not receiving the attention that the Minister for Public Works led us to expect, and this Chamber asks that the delegate from this Chamber to the Central League approach that body with the view of furthering the business."
