OPPOSITION TO TRAMWAYS BILU

Dunedin, July 29. At. a meeting of the City Coun'cillast night,, a motion was unanimously adopted to the effect that the Tramways Act Amendment Bill be opposed, as ]f it is passe'd the council's administration of, the tramways would possibly be unnecessarily hampered, and its powers seriously prejudiced. A report by the tramways manager presented to the council expressed the opinion that so far as the local system was concerned there was, not the slightest necessity for passing the Bill, and he strongly recommended that the measure be opposed. Auckland, July 29. ' The - City Council has resolved to strongly oppose the- Tramways Bill and; to ask members of Parliament to oppose it and to co-operate with the' Wellington, Chrisfchuich, Dunedin, and Wanganui Councils in an endeavour to defeat it. The reasons • urged against the Bill.were that it was a blow at the local Government by centralising matters of importance in the Ministry, and the insecurity to municipal contracts when the provisions or a deed can be so simply over-riddea by regulations made by the Governor. AUCKLAND KENNEL CLUB, Auckland, July 29. .; The Auckland Kennel Club's show was opened to-day, the number of entries . constituting a record, over 300 dogs being.kenneled. The quality was declared by the judges to be good. The results of the challenge classes are. aa follow:—Barrois Dogs: Mrs. E. Harrison's Gentleman Joe; bitches, Mr. G. 'Harrison's Josephine. Setters, English: Dogs, Messrs. Cook and Smith's Burkeland Rock; bitches, Messrs. Griffiths and M'lntosh's Whitney. Nell Irish Setters: Dog, Mr. C. A. Scuffert's Barney; bitch, Mr. W.' Hinchcliffe Simmon's Bungaree Sheikh. Gordon Setters: Dogs, Mr. James Keith's Ranger; bitches, Mr. Chas. B. Elliott's Maon Girl. Bull Terriers: Dogs, Mr. S. Hill's Dan LemK bitches, Mr. E. EL Vazey's Ghost. The Ladies. Bracelet was won by Miss Ida Smith's "Wellington" English Terrier Burkeland Rock, Mrs.. W. J. Harper's Irish Terrier Lurgan leery being second,. arid Mrs. ■J. H. White's black, pug Blaokboy being, third. This class was largely entered for, 27 of all breeds 'coming under the judge's eye.
