THE BUSH SICKNESS REMEDY.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS. (By Telegrapn.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, July 28. With reference to Mr. : Clinkard's reported success in dealing with bush sickness at Mauiaku by feeding bran to his dairy cows, it was stated that Mr. Clinkard worked on the basis of a statement by the Chief Veterinarian (Mr. Keakcs) that the soil is deficient in phosphates. Mr. Eeakes now points out that an analysis of the soil at Mamaku showed a deficiency iii phosphates, but on many soils deficient in phosphate the disease known as bush sickness does not occur, and the cause of tho.disease has yet to be ascertained. A large amount of analytical work is going on in the Agricultural Department with a view to establishing a basis on which to carry out experimental work; and arrive at definite conclusions.
Mr. Jfassey is asking the Minister {or Agriculture whether ho will make provision on the Supplementary Estimates, or otherwise, for u suitablo reward lor the discovery of a remedy for bush sickness, which seriously affects stock in some of tho localities on the east coast of the Auckland provincial district.
