VANCOUVER SERVICE.
ENTRANCE OF NEW STEAMER. LUNCHEON ON THE ZEALANDIA. By Telenraph-Press Association—OonyrUhl (Rec. -July 27, 9 p.m.) Sydney, juiy 27. The entranco of thci new HuddartParker liner Zealandia into the CanadianAustralian service was celebrated to-day by a luncheon aboard the vessel, a large gathering of shipping representatives attending. Mr. W. T. Appleton, managing director of the Huddart-Parker Company, said he and Sir James Mills, managing di-. rector o£ the Union Company, were proud of' establishing connecting links between two gems in the crown of the British Empire. They had 'no tenure with the service, but still they were in for better or worse, and were going the whole hog. If they got tho mail contract they would endeavour to make the service a better one.
Mr. T. W. Whitson, secretary to the Union Company, in replying to the tnast "The Union Company," said his directors always considered that trade would follow the extension of the company's operalions. They" endeavoured always to be in advancc of requirements, and to be up-to-date in everything. He thought that policy had been realised. As New Zealand had prospered so had the company, and its red funnel was to bo seen, not only in New Zealand and the Commonwealth, but far off in London and Canada. It supported over fifteen thousand, people. The Vancouver service offered a splendid opportunity for the development of trade between Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, but' more than that, .it was a link in the great chain of routes which covered the whole British Empire.
