MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
; (Before Mr. W. G.:Riddell, S.M.) ; BRAWL IN MARION STREET. As tho result'of a brawl outside a, coffee stall in Marion Street, three young men named Joseph Gribble, George Spence, ami Edmund Waters, were charged withusing threatening behaviour, .with intent to provoke a breach of tho peace. The threo pleaded not guilty, but the : evidenco for tho prosecution differed. It appeared from this evidence that Gribble . and Spence ! were drinking' together, and it was arranged mutually that Spence should I ay for tho drinks and Gribblo for supper. After supper, however, theUatter refused to meet, tlio bill, .and a quarrel.arose. Gribble'was alleged to ' have knocked Spence down and put his shoulder out, and Waters then came on the scene and uideavoured to prevent any further dis- . 'turbance. The arm of-.the law also tooK a hand in the proceedings about this i stage, and the three men were arrested. His Worship fined Gribblo .£2, with tho option of 14 days' imprisonment. Spoiim was fined £1, in default 7 days. Waters, who protested against the police assumption that he was implicated, was fine<l 10s., with the alternative of 48 hours'- . imprisonment. - TROUBLESOME SEAMAN. Joseph York, a seaman on the Waiwera, appeared on remand charged, witli drunkenness,' and also with using ' improper languago on the King's . Wharf. Accused pleaded guilty, and also admitted absenting himself from the steamer without leave. A fine of i£2 ' was imposed, with Vs. costs, and his Worship ordered that if the fine was paid York was to ho placed on board the vessel. * INSOBRIETY. , John Gill- was convicted of insobriety, declared an habitual dyunknrd, and sent to prison for a fortnight. Tho magistrate also > ordered that a prohibition order should be issued against him, to havo effect in the Wellington and Ilntt Licensing Districts for twclvo months. Edmund Montgomery pleaded not guilty to being found drunk in Hunter Street on the previous evening. • After' hearing tho evidence, accused was fined 10s., with the option of 48 hours' imprisonment. Mary Tanner, who pleaded similarly to a charge of intemperance was fined lis., with the alternative' of 18 hours. A -first offending delinquent. was convicted and discharged,.
MOUNT COOK POLICE COURT. At tho Mount Cook Police Court yesterday, before Jlr. T. S. Lambert, .1.1., . Charles King pleaded guilty to being drunk in Cuba Street. Accused was convicted and discharged. .Walter hdivard Wise pleaded' not guilty to a charge ot drunkenness in Abel Smith. Street, but the arresting 'constable .and . Sergeant Rutledge gave evidonco as io his state. He was fined 10s., or 48 hours in gaol. Henry Sandow pleaded guilty, to insobriety in Taranaki .Streot, and was fined OS., or 24 hours' imprisonment. . Albin Anderson pleaded guilty to being drunk in Buckle Street, and was fined 10s., or 48 hours' incarceration. A first offender waj convicted and discharged.
