VICTORIA COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tho monthly meeting of the Victoria College Council was-held last everting, there being, present: .The'chairman (Mr. v 9 fl Sir Robert Stout, the Kev. W.; A. Evans, and .Messrs. Chas. Wilson, C. Watson, ,T. R. Iteming, A. T. Maginnity, W. H. Quick, and A. W. Hogg, ' M.P. According, to the :monthly summary ; of tho fianancial position, there was shown, a. credit balance of .£1424 2s. Gd. With regard to the building fund it was stated that the total subscriptions received amounted , to .£Bl2 10s.'(id., which, added to the Government subsidy of .61000, brought the total •to .42412 10s. Gd. The total expenditure was. set down at ,£3046 16s. lid. The Finance Committee was authorised ■to arrange for tho carrying on of treeplanthig operations, duriig the current year. The Town Clerk wrote conveying tho decision of the City Council that it was not prepared to'iiistal another lamp on the Mount Street track. Consideration was given to the Library Committee's recommendation that a permanent librarian, be appointed. It was' pointed out that there were now over 7000 volumes in the college library, and the work of systematically cataloguing the books was becoming a matter of urgency. The council decided that as funds were low, the question be held over for the present. The committee also reported that two meetings of the sub-committee appoiiited to confer with representatives of the Professorial Board and of other libraries in the city had been held with the view of securing co-ordination in the purchase of scientific periodicals. The chairman of the committees of tho various libraries had been consulted on the subject and as soon as replies were. received from these gentlemen tho committee will report to the council. The report was adopted.
