EXPORTING DRAUGHT HORSES
MARKET FLUCTUATIONS'. A Taranaki breeder of draught horsos who has.been taking shipments of horseflesh to Australia for some years told a Dominion representative that when he was over with a, shipment not many weeks ago he found tho market down. He says that the prices are not as high as they ,used to be; and the demand, too, is somewhat slack.
It has been pointed out in The DqiriNiON before that in order that the exporting business shall pay the breeders, Australian market prices need •to' be at least '£10, Higher ; than '' New Zealand prices.■' It .was . riot', always necessary that it should be so iri- ■ the .strictest . sense, because , Australian buyers' showed a great, preference for New Zealand-bred horses, and were prepared to pay more for them. Ac'cording to the' . breeder .referred, to above, that preference is riot'.being shown, so much"': now, -although- our horses are usually recognised as being better animals than tho average bred in Australia.." .' . V ■ "-.!
, However, even with the ' less •■■ satisfactory market, there seems tohe;profit for the (breeder mentioned •is'leaving New Zealand' for ' Australia again, very shortly with a. good string |of.-'marketable horses, Hjj regards the state of the market as~iir.was when he encountered it last as merely one of the fluctuations which are experienced in all ventures T/hen they are persisted in, -but .he says : that -those, who ..have shipped fairly regularly have had ; more ups than downs. ..-.-.'
