MANGOLD CROPPING.
EXPERIMENTS IN MANAWATU. The North Island Fields Instructor, Mr. G. de S. Bayliss, has been supervising experiments with mangold crops 'in the Feilding and the Palmerston North: districts. At Feilding the sito was on Mr. Hugh Burrell's farm, ■ and at Palmerston North on Mr. F. S. M'Eao's farm.
At Mr. BurrelPs the crops were sown on December 6, 1909, in drills 28 inches apart, with the following manures :— Two cwt. Japanese super., lowt. bonedust, lewt. -kainit, ijewt. suljji. ammonia, and Jcwt. salt. On June 16, 1910, records were taken. Sutton's crimson tankard yielded -12.4 tons; Nimmo and Blair's long red, 50.3 tons; ■Nimmo and Blair's ciianipion globe, 51.5 tons; Sutton's prizo-iviuner X globe, 62.1, tons; (Jarton's gate-post large Y intermediuie, 5(3.8* tons; Garton's improved new • sugar mangold, 42.4 tons ;■ and Nimmo and Blair's prize-winner Y globe, 42.9 tons. ' The previous crop had been potatoes, and the land had been frequently cultivated prior to the sowing of the mangolds; resulting in the land being free from weeds, and producing . a good crop, < although no inter-cultivation had been , ' given after the crop was up, beyond thinning the plants. At Mr. M'Kae's, three kinds were sown. Half of each plot was sown without manure, and on the other half a mixture of 2cwt. super, and lewt. Island guano per acre was used. The yields were as follow:—Carton's mammoth long red, manured, 64 tons; same without manure, 56S- tons; Nimmo and Blair's' golden tankard, manured, 57J tons; same without manure, 57 tons; Sutton's prize-winner Y globe, manured,;' 87 tons; and same without manure;; 69 tons. ■ • - •;■ •
