WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held lust evening, there being present: The Mayor (..Mr. T. M. Wilioni, M.l\), and Councillors J. P. Luke, M.P., l'\ Cohen,'T. Hallinger, G. Frost J- Trevor, A. It. Atkinson, J. J. Devine, J. 1). Fitzgerald, \V. H. Morrah, 11. Fletcher, D. M'Laren, M.P., A. 11. Hiiulinavsh, and T. Carmichael.

The Finance and Property Committee's recommendations—That a deposit of/Cl2O be accepted from the Highbury Estate Company to ensure satisfactory completion "of the roads on the estate, and that the roads be approved; that the dedication of the strip of land between North Terrace and Riniu Road, Kelburne, be accepted; that the petitioners for the extension of the water supply main to the western side of Oncpu Road, Lyall Bay, be informed that if tliey pay' the cost (estimated at ,£lO 10s.) a temporay main will be extended to their promises; and that a claim be forwarded to the Bailway Department for the sum of .£295 19s. 5d., cost of repairing damage to the Wainui pipe line caused by a slip on the Ilutt Road, were adopted.

On the recommendation of the Legisla-: tion Committee it was agreed that an offer be made to Mrs. Hull, of Manners Street that the council will bo prepared to consider her application for the conversion, of her Market Hall reserve lease on payment of a rental of <£165 per annum for the balance of the present lease, viz., two years and nine months. Surprise was expressed by some councillors at the council agreeing to alienate this section. Councillor Cohen- explained that although the section was suitably placeil as a site for a market, it was too small. Councillor M'Laren said the council seemed half-hearted in .this matter. It would have been necessary to acquire adjoining sites in order to use this section for a market, but the council seemed bent on alienating, instead of conserving, land capable of being utilised in the future for the purposes of a market. The next business was taken, without any indication being given- of the council's futuro policy with, regard to tho Market Hall proposal. The tender of.- Messrs. Merrywcathci and Sons, in the sum of ,£879, was accepted for the purchase of a petrol motor fire engine and tiro escape ladder combined, conditionally upon them giving a twelve mouths' guarantee. The city engineer reported that during the period June 2S-.Tnly 12 applications to the number of 38 had been received for permission to erect, alter, or extend buildings," and in 30 instances plans were examined • and approved and permits issued. The estimated value ,of the work for. which permits were ■ issued totalled .£72o3—city .£3091,. Melrose .£3177, Onslow ■£932.

The following tenders were accepted Centrifugal pumps, Lawrence and Hanson; fire brigade hose, lieid nnd Reid; cast-iron bars, A. and T. Burt.
