Tho house was owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, of the North Island, and . occupied by John Ross, his wife, and brother-in-law. The fire. is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney. The house.and furniture were totally destroyed. Insurances were: On the buildin;, JCSOO in the Royal; oil tho furniture, ,£225 in the Alliance. The place, which was old and constructed of wood, burnt out in half an hour. One of the inmates had to escape by a window.
