D BATTERY AT HOME.
The D Battery;. New Zealand's champion field gunners, gave an "at home" in the. Masonic Hall laA evening. Tho hall was tastefully adorned with flags, and there was a large number of lady admirers of the corps present. Visiting officers included Lieutenant-Colonel Banchop, Major lloorhouse,. an old commander' of the Battery,' and several officers from other city corps. Major .A. .1. l'etherick, officer commanding, occupied the chair, and read an apology for. absence from Captain Richardson. The. first part'of "the evening's enjoyment consisted of a w.cll-diversified concert''programme, to which the following contributed:—Misses 51. M'Laughlin and Petersen, Messrs.'Grant,-Cummins, Tuiiley, J. l?obinson,'Couper, R. A. Keenan, It. Roberts, Sweeney, Herbert, and Drivers Duncan and Heintz., . During tho cvcning'Mrs. Petherick, wife of the officer commanding, presented the prizes its follow:—l'earco Cup, Right Section, under Lieutenant Slcelley.; Moorhouse Cup, and St. Hill Badges,, No. X Sub-section, under Sergeant Gauntlett; Lieutenant Smith's trophy for leading gunner of the Battery, Gunner U. K.. .Marty; best six drivers, corporals, Corporals Simmons and Shilling, Bombardier Schoch, Drivers Ward, , Wrigleyi and Quinlan; Champion Shooting Rifle Belt, Corporal Plimmer (for tho second time in succession). As a mark of esteem, and to show their appreciation of tho. good work ho had done for the Battery, Major Petherick, on behalf of the.. corps, • presented Major lloorhouse with, a handsome, silver vase. Tho gift was suitably acknowledged.- . Major Petherick also presented StaffSergeant Petersen,, field. artillery instructor, with silver tea and coffee pots, as a small token of tho yeoman service he .had rendered to the Battery. Lieutenant-Colonel Baucliop, in handing the New Zealand . Challenge Shield .to Major Petherick, on behalf of the corps, said he considered they had well earned the victory accomplished; and, furthermore, the men had' won it in honourable competition. ' ' Major Moorhouse also presented Major Petherick, on behalf of the Battery, with the Rhodes Cup,'and said that the corps had accomplished a great' honour In appropriating; two such valuable trophies, lie spoke in eulogistic terms of tho good work Captain Richardson' had done for the corps.'
