DOMESTIC HELP.
IMMIGRATION 01' SERVANTS. At the. -farmers' Conference ■ yesterday, Mr. I l '. ■.. Horrell (Canterbury) moved: "That this conference fully endorses the ibit-rcpeatcd opinion of tho lack -of domestic help, and respectfully' asks tho Priuio Minister to assist any movement which has for its object the immigration of "suitable 1 domestic helps." The mover said he had not', brought this , forward to. assist the rich. . Tne case that was ni'ost prominently before him was that of a man who was working for him, and who wanted a woman to help his wife while he was away l'rom home. He could not get a woman to assist, and ho coijld only get a nurse from town at tliree guineas a week, and she insisted that there must be a servant in the house. -The mail was not getting more' than three guineas a week. He (tile speaker") did not want girls brought out to bn slaves, as- one of the recent .Labour deputation seemed to • have implied. If he knew of any employer who would treat ihem so he would, like- to expose that employer. 'This proposal was emphatically for the benefit of the poor. r . Mr. 0. F. Clothier (Canterbury) sec-onded-the motion, and endorsed the mover's statements. " The motion was carried.
