THE LEANING TOWER.
; ITALIAN MONUMENT ENDANGERED. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright-Rome, July 11. An Italian Royal Commission reports that the well-known Tower of Pisa is leaning over more than formerly,, and that it is likely to collapse unless preventive measures are taken.
[The leaning tower of Pisa is considered to bo tho most magnificent example of a round tower in existence. It was built by the citizens in 1174 to rival the Campanile of St. Mark's, Venice, which collapsed a few years ago, and is now being restored. The leaning tower is 51 feet in diameter, and 172 feet high. The tower overhangs its base by, 13 feet, and for long was supposed to have been constructed so. It is on wooden piles driven into boggy ground. When the tower bad been carried up about 35 feet it began to settle, to one side. As tho work was carried on the levels were altered so as to keep- the centre of gravity within tho base.]
