The. local Loyal Orange Lodge held a special service at the (-nival-ion Army Barrack? yesterday afternoon, when there VMS a large attendance. The master of the lodgp, Bro. -Jackson, presided; ami other speakers were the J!cv. Messrs. M'Donald and More, and Aujutant u ayward. The Salvation Army Band headed th« procession to and from the lodgeroom, the mcml>ers of the Order appearing in full regalia. The P.almorsfon Brass Band, under Conductor Con way, Rave an excellent programme of music in the bemd rotunda in the Square yesterday afternoon. The day was beautifully fine, anil lar,c;e crowds of people assembled in the gardens for the occasion. The Rev. A. Doull, the new pastor of St. Andrew's Church, preached his first sermon here yesterday to a largo congregation, and made a very favourable impression. A men's olubroom is to be opened hero very shortly, rooms having been secured for 'he purpos? in the Square, where provision is. to be made for games, supply of newspapers, periodical;, etc. Mir? who takes great interest in all philanthropic movements, lias the matter in hand, and is organising the clubrwm ra the same lines as similar institutions in Scotland. It is expected the rooms will be ready for occupation on Saturday next, when I her \vill be opened by the Mayor. Mr. J. X. Nash. Among Palmcrston visitors to the show at Hawera are Messrs. S. K. Lancaster, J. A. M'Cren, and J. C. lane who are attending a meeting of the Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association there. At the anniversary services of Ihe Board Street Methodist Church yesterday there was a very largo attendance. The Kev. J. A. Imxford, of Wanganui, was the preacher, and special music was rendered by n strong choir under the baton of Mr. V. Chisholm. The anthems I "0 Host in the Lord," ami "The Heavens aro Telling" were given in line style, thesoloists being Mcsdamos Bath, 11. Mowlera, and. TorstMisteu, and Messrs. G II Bennett and Davis. The proposed debate between the Palmcrstoii ami Wiuiganui Debating Societies has boon postponed for a fortnight at the request of the latter body. A most interesting address on the territorial system was delivered by Colonel Knbiu at Ihe meeting of the Manmvntu Officers' Club on Saturday night.
