ROTORUA TROUT.
AN rNTERKSTING INVESTIGATION. A report is being prepared for the Tourist Department as to th» possibility of disposing in some profitable way of surplus trout at Kotorua. Thp Hon. T. Mackenzie, .who was questioned on the matter by ' a Dojiixiox representative last evening, expressed some uoubts with regard to o proposal which has been made that the fish should be cured and smoked, and distributed lor sale throughout the country. A proportion of tho fish are afflicted by a worm, which it is thought raayget into the flesh, as well as into the intestines, and which is responsible tor (lie "witdmass" of tsertum of the trout. Investigations are being made nt Kuakura with regard to the nature and development of this worm, which it is suggested may be transmitted from the shag. If this Inst supposition should )» vcrifitil, it will probably be found necessary to put a nriee on shags This was. done some time" ago, owing to the depredations of this bird among" the limit, but the price was removed later on account of representations that the shags did good service in destroying the more weakly fish. In case it is" decided to commence a trade in smoked trout, tho curing work will probably be kit to private industry, and will, not bo undertaken by the Government.
