OUT OF DATE,
NGAHAURANGA GORGE ROAD. 1
The state of tie Ngahauranga Gorge Road was again the subject of discussion at the Makaja County Council meeting yesterday. Apparently the council feels that the problem of maintaining the road is getting beyond it. The chairman remarked that this was tho West Coast main arterial highway, ■and it was hopelessly out of date. It was utterly unfit to stand the motor, traction, and wagon traffic it was now called upon to. bear. A commission in which Wellington city should be joined might very well be called upon to consider tho question of making tho road strong and wide enough to ben* modern, traffic. It was decided that in the meantime the council talio necessary steps to prevent the running of motorwagous and traction engines on the road. The chairman stated that' the council could only collect' penalties for breach of by-laws or for damage done. It could not close the road.
