'* E- A. SMITH " AFFAIR.
OFFICIAL EXPLANATION DEFERRED.
Owing to a discussion- arising in f&a House of Representatives yesterday, afternoon on the boy immigration, question, the Prime Minister, who had promised to explain the facts in connection with "E. A. Smith" and the High Commissioner's Department, intimated to members that he would have to postpone doing so until Tuesday afternoon. Just before the dinner adjournment at 5.30 p.m., Sir Joseph said that if there had not been such a long and unexpected debate that afternoon 'he would have been glad to have made an official explanation on the subject, as lie had promised. It would not,, however, be fair for him to make his statement at that stage, for as the time was so limited it would deprive members from discussing the subject. He would make the statement on Tuesday afternoon, and prior to then wonJd see that necessary papers dealing with the matter were circulated. As Mr. Massey had referred to the postponement of the explanation, he also took that opportunity of referring to the matter. Sir. Massey: Oh, I was not finding fault. , Sir Joseph: I did not say so, Mr, Massey. In fact, I approve of thf course you intend to pursue.
