DEATH OF SERGEANT MAGUIRE.
A PETITION TO PARLIAMENT.
Among the petitions presented to tha House yesterday was one * from Mary Maguire, widow of the late Sergeant John Maguire, who lost his life in April last in Palmerston North, whilst in the execution of his duty. She states that by virtue of his past recprd of valuable service, deceased had every hope of obtaining further preferment in the force. Already she had received the sum of £500 from the' Police Department in respect of his death. This sum, and an annual allowance of £18 from the Polico Provident Fund represented her. sole means. Tlfe income derivable from the sum of £500, together with the allowance of £18, was not sufficient for her proper support and maintenance. Petitioner wont on to say that she was not in a position to increase her means to a ; sufficient degreo by her own efforts. In comparison with other compassionate allowances granted in the past, and in view of tho special' circumstances attending tho death of the late Sergeant Maguire, the amount received was not a sufficient compensation. Petitioner prays that sbo be granted such. further sum as would, when invested with the allowance of £500, provide an income sufficient for her proper support.
