MASTERTON NOTES. (From Our Special Correspondent.)

Masterton, Juno 23. Mr. IV. Young, late of "Waitara, lias taken over the Gladstone Hotel, on tho boundary of tho Masterton electorate. An effort is being made to arrango to take tho juvenile members of tho Masterton branch of the Navy League—of whom there are 180—to Wellington on the occasion of tho next visit of a warship to that port. A quoits match between members of the borough stall and of St. Matthew's Club was played last evening, and was won by the former'by 518 points to 537. 'l'lie Wairarapa Caledonian Society held ail "Ingleside" in the Exchange Ilall this evening, which was largely attended and much enjoyed. ill'. H. Smith, a well-known sawmillcr of Nireaha, Forty-Jlilo Bush, has begun a sawmilling business on a rather largo scale near Martinborough.„ _ Jn tho Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. C. C. Hogg, M.P., will be opposed in his candidature for re-election as a representative of the Wairarapa Ward on the Wellington Education Board. He and Sir. \V. C. Buchauan, M.P., another representative of the AVairarapa, are the two oldest members of the board, Mr. Buchanan having served, without intermission, for a periol of neiriy thirty yea"s.

Tho commission agency business in Masterton is apparently not quite what it seems, if the experience of an agent who gave in the Magistrate's Court this morning may ho regarded as a criterion. The agent in question stated that there had been a distinct slump in the commission business during the last year or two, and he had teen able to earn only £1 Os. Bd. during the lust three months. Tlio court sympathised with him.

Messrs. J. B. Jloodie (president) and F. W. Carey (vice-president) will represent the Masterton Chamber of Commerce at the conference of Chambers Df Commerce opening at Palmorston North to-morrow. Ths high position occupied by the Wairarapa cheese factories in the cheese classes at thePalme.rston AVinter Show lias encouraged the thought that cheese-mak-ing will make. marked strides hero during the coining season. Tlio Rongokokako factory, which was awarded first prize, is situated a few miles from Hketahuna.

At a mcftting last night of tho Friendly Societies' Council letters were read from the Prime Minister and the Dominion Friendly Societies' Council stating that, under the Act of 1909, societies could employ their own auditors.
