THE STRIKE AT PAPAROA.
NOT SERIOUS. According to Mr. Maxwell, managing' director of tb© Paparoa Company, the trouble at tko Paparoa mine is a very trifling matter. Last week the mino was closed down to enable the change from temporary to permanent machinery to be made, and during that tinio tho miners were not working. They resumed work on Saturday, when no mention was made to those in authority of any dissatisfaction; indeed, nothing was known of any troublo until Monday morning, when the men failed to begin work. Since then tho mine manager had reported that the causes of dissatisfaction were not of any moment, and the men were expected to again turn to. According to tho annual report of tho company, a strike took place in April last, but it was amicably settled within a few days. The mine manager in writing of tho conditions at Paparoa reported:—"Ono of the difficulties we have at present is that of .getting a steady class of men to settle down here, owing to the primitive conditions under which they have to live, and the conditions attached to the disposal of the Government township lots do not improve tho position."
