Messrs. H. G. Ell, T. E'. Taylor, and A. S. Malcolm, M.P.'s, are passengers by tlio Maori, which left Lyttelton for Wellington last night. ' Mr. Poole, M.P. for Auckland West, has arrived in Wellington for the forthcoming session. Mr. J. Mackenzie, Commissioner of Crown Lands, returned last night from an official visit to Mangawoka, Pongaroa, and adjacent districts. At the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday tho Hospital Committco recommended that Dr. Anson's resignation of tho position of consulting surgeon bo accepted with regret, and that ho be thanked for his many years' services. It was decided that as there aro already two consulting surgeons on tho honorary medical stall no further appointment should bo-made. Among tho passengers arriving from the south by the Maori this morning are Professor Scott (Canterbury College), Dr. Cockayne (Government Botanist), Dr. Pomaro (Native Health Officer), Dr. Henry, and Dr. M'Evedy. Mr. Frank H. Hart, of the. literary staff of tho Christchurch "Press," has been appointed editor of the Timaru "Herald." Ho will take up his new duties at the end of August.—Press Association. Mr. S. H. Go-Han, who has been spending a couple of months' holiday in/'tho Dominion, left Auckland for Sydney by tho Malic-no on Monday. Ho returns to England, via South Africa, and will visit tho Zambesi to see the raco for tho world's sculling championship. Mr. G. A. Buttle, chairman of tho Auckland Stock Exchange, is on a visit to Wellington, and was present at the noon sitting of the local exchange yesterday. The undermentioned officers having passed an examination under the Central Board of Military Examination on March 16, 1910, have been granted captaincy certificates:—Lieutenant Albert Edward Brown, No. 3 Company, Wellington Division, New Zealand Garrison Artillery; Lieutenant Henry Hawthorn, Civil Service Rifles (WellingLieutenant Edward James Hulbert, Wellington Post and Telegraph Riiles; Lieutenant James Edward Rundie, Napier Guards Rifles. Mr. G. Bissot, editor of publications to the Department of Agriculture, who has been unwell for some time past, is making steady recovery, and, though at present still confined to his room, looks forward to resuming his duties shortly. The many friends of Mr. W. B. Bennett, late -of Karori, will be pleased to learn of his success in America. His first appointment was to the head factory of the National Cash Register Company, Dayton, Ohio, and after being there for about toil months ho was transferred to the headquarters of tho executive officers in Broadway, Now York, as assistant manager to trie foreign department. Ho filled this position for just over a year, and now, by tho American mail, news ' has been received, that he lias been offered, and has accepted, an important position in tho head offico of the company in London, 'England. He loft New York on May 11 by the R.M.S. Mauretania, and took up his London appointment on Max 17.

A Press' Association telegram from Waipawa states that Father Johnston, who is removing to Kaikoura, Marlborough, was entertained on Monday night by a large and representative gathering, and presented with a purse of sovereigns and other gifts. Eulogistic reference was made to his good work during eight years' residence at Waipawa. The letter-carriers of Wellington intend making a presentation to Mr. J. E. Hutton, the retiring ■ Chief Postmaster of Wellington, at the Masonic Hall on July 8. Captain G. G. Smith, naval registrar, returned to Wellington yesterday; morning by H.M.S. Pioneer, which vessel lie accompanied on the cruise to Picton, Nelson, Westport, and New Plymouth. Fifty-ono applications were received in London in response to the advertisement for three veterinary surgeons to sorve under the New Zealand Government. The three selected candidates are:—Mr. Edmund Carlisle Howard, M.R.0.V.5., of High Street, Nairn, Scotland. Mr. Howard is at present in private practice, but ho holds the position of meat and sanitary inspector for Nairn, and he has held county and borough appointments under the Local Government Board. Mr. Richard Finch, M.R.C.V.S., 16 St. Thomas's Road, Chorley, Lancashire, holds a diploma in Veterinary State Medicine, Victoria University. He received his professional education at tho , New Veterinary College, _ Edinburgh, and obtained his diploma in 1901. In his final year he won various medals and certificates of merit. Mr. Finch has had sis months' practical work at Manchester abattoirs, and seven years with Mr. Porritt, the Preston local authority inspector. Mr. William Watkin Herbert Edwards, M.R.C.V.S., of Danygarth, Hay, Hereford. Mr. Edwards has been in private practice since 1904. From 1901-4 he was in _ the South 'African Constabulary, and acted as meat inspector for tho division to which be was attached. He has also had experience at Colchester and at the Metropolitan Meat Market, London. Mr. Ales. J. Fraser, who has been in charge of the Sydney agency of the Now Zealand Press Association for over 20 years, has been appointed manager of the syndicate which supplies Australian and New Zealand papers with cablo messages. The vacancy . caused by" Mr. Fraser's retirement has been filled by the promotion of Mr; G. Bradley, who has been for many years on tho Sydney staff of tho Press Association. ■'
